Gear Up - June 2010
Why do we climb rocks and mountains? Because they’re there. While that idealistic notion is all well and good, there’s a bit more to how we climb those rocks and mountains, so here’s a few essentials to get you to the top..

Gear Up - May 2010
As the snow melts off and the rivers rage, this water gear will help you stay safe and stylish in your liquid playground.

Gear Up - March 2010
Here, we present for your gratification a fresh batch of geary goodness, to make your life in the mountains even more enjoyable.

Gear Up - April 2010
Spring means fresh mud, hot pavement, sick downhill, and steep climbs, so squeeze into that Spandex and get ready to ride hard with this fresh gear.

Gear Up - February 2010
Hopefully, it’s just plain cold by the time you read this, and not well-digger’s-ass cold. Either way, new gear, like that featured here, has been known to give the warmfuzzies, on occasion.

Gear Up - Deep Winter 2010
It’s time for deep winter, deep snow, and a bag full of new gear for the New Year. Make sure to put this stuff in your booty sack.

Gear Up - Holidays 2009
Good winter gear can ward off discomfort or even lifelong damage (i.e. frostbite). Here’s a collection of dependable, functional and even ingenious items for the cold winter settling into the hills … and our bones.

Gear Up - Ski Season
As the snow’s in at the more prominent elevations, we made contact with friend of the Gazette and jet-set ski-bum extraordinaire, Peter Kray. He offered a review or two of items he tested on a trip to South America … attached to emails laced with gloating tones to needle us officebound saps. Muchas gracias, amigo. . . .

Gear Up - October 2009
Autumn’s here, and there’s plenty of new gear worth ogling. This month, I fished around for some items to get you through: a place to put your booze, your papers and your ass; plus, a shirt (which, together with shoes, will get you into most establishments), and coverage for your bloodshot eyes.

Gear Up - From MG's Gear Issue
“You don’t own your things; they own you.” Or so the saying goes. Nonetheless, if you’re like me (a middle-of-the-road guy who enjoys spending time outside), you probably know that carrying a lot of stuff is a fool’s errand, but bringing the right stuff is a trait of the wise. With this in mind, I called in five items that’ll work with you, not own you.

Pedaling Issue's Gear Up
Walking around town this summer and seeing all the wrist and elbow casts on my friends, I am reminded why I don’t mountain bike. So for this month, I gave my man Tim Bateman a call down in Moab. TB, a.k.a. “the Hippie,” is a salt-of-the earth mountain biker, a guide at Western Spirit in Moab and a 20-year man in the saddle. Tim gave me some leads on a few items for biking style and function.

Gear Up to Hit the Trail
Since the HET™ (hard economic times) is upon us, perhaps the simplicity of hoofin’ it in the mountains means more now than ever. Aldous Huxley predicted in “Brave New World” that someday society would discourage nature loving because it gives one time to think seditious thoughts and fails to use up the disposable resources that drive the economy. Seditious thoughts and conservation? Sounds like a revolution. Still, unless you’re John Muir with his burlap sack and leather retreads, you might want to check a little new gear before hitting the trail.

Gear Up for the Black Canyon
For this month's reviews, I decided to hook up with my good friend Madaleine Sorkin and head into Colorado's Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Mads and I rapped down the south rim to the base of a route called Tague Yer Time, named in honor of a fallen hero, Cameron Tague. No pushover, the 2,000-foot route demands a cool head and serious skills, which is why I brought Madaleine.

River Gear
Coincidentally, just as I sat down to write this, I got an alert from american rivers.org and found that they had just released their list of our 10 most endangered rivers. Pretty bleak reading, for sure. No longer just about keeping them free to enjoy, it’s now a matter of keeping the rivers, and us, alive.

Fresh Focus
It’s not mystic wisdom to gather that you don’t know what something’s worth until it’s gone. Sitting here on “vacation” in Florida, that little nugget really slams home. The beach is cool, and Jungle Irv gave us a hell of an airboat ride through the swamp today, but this place is one stucco’d mini-mall after another. Barely an inch of condo-less coast remains.
