Mountain Gazette Magazine
Mountain Media - Deep Winter
By Brendan Leonard From MG No. 163 - January 2010

Plenty of famous folks have written for the Mountain Gazette over the years — David Roberts, Royal Robbins, Ed Abbey, Mary Sojourner, Charles Bowden, John Nichols et al. Plenty of MG writers have done other cool things, and all the items in this month’s Mountain Media just happen to come from writers who have been published in this magazine. Hey, speaking of famous MG writers, if anyone wants to buy/publish a 60,000-word manuscript tentatively titled “The Only Good Story I Know,” drop me a line. media@mountaingazette.com.

Web: “The Season”

Freelance writer and dirtbag Fitz Cahall wrote a couple stories for the MG a few years back, my favorite being the one about how he bought a Mitsubishi Sigma in Australia for a few hundred dollars, and when it died, he set it on fire and rolled it off a cliff into the ocean. Fitz has moved onto other notable pursuits, like dreaming up, creating and producing “The Dirtbag Diaries,” about to enter its fourth year of podcasting. Fitz has now teamed up with filmmaker Bryan Smith (“49 Megawatts”) to produce an Internet TV show called “The Season,” a 22-episode series following five Pacific Northwest outdoor athletes — a climber, a mountain biker, a snowboarder, a kayaker and a boulderer — through a season of their respective pursuits. What is an “Internet TV show,” you ask? It’ll be available for free download on several websites, including Arc’Teryx and Outside magazine, and if you have one of those iPod walkman machines, you can get the show on iTunes and then watch it with your headphones on while you’re on the shuttle bus to the slopes.
